How AI Can Help Identify Learning Gaps and Recommend Relevant Skills
Turn assessment and performance evidence into targeted practice recommendations while avoiding labels, overreach, and opaque decisions.

A learning gap is the difference between required performance and demonstrated performance. AI can help find patterns across evidence, but a low score alone does not explain the cause.
Use multiple signals
Combine diagnostic questions, project work, error types, confidence, time patterns, and instructor observation. Ask whether the issue is missing knowledge, weak practice, unclear instructions, language, accessibility, motivation, or a broken process.
Recommend the smallest useful step
A good system suggests a prerequisite explanation, targeted exercise, worked example, peer discussion, or short module. It explains why the recommendation appeared and lets the learner or teacher reject it. It checks again after practice.
Prevent harmful labeling
Do not convert temporary difficulty into a permanent profile. Limit data collection, expire old inferences, test recommendation quality across groups, and route consequential decisions to a person. Give learners access to their data and a correction process.
Start with a narrow pilot and compare recommendations with expert judgment. Measure mastery and transfer, not clicks. The goal is a helpful next step, not a perfect portrait of the learner.
